The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator
Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service
to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of
the most distinguished American picture book for children.

as accessed through their Internet browsers. This method makes it easy for
educators to check the veracity of every online source their students cite.
They've also included new information specifying how to cite the graphics,
sounds, and video clips students retrieve for use in their multimedia presentations.

The Valley of the Shadow Edward L. Ayers (University of Virginia) has created
almost 4,000 pages of digitized newspaper articles, transcriptions of the 1860
Census, tax records, registries of free blacks, compiled service records for
both Union and Confederate soldiers, and VRML battle maps. Viewers can create
their own "histories" by comparing fragments from diaries, articles
in newspapers, and the 1860 Census report.

in the country. Then we adapted them for the Web. Some of these activities
are entirely electronic. Your child will do everything on screen. Others
require you to go to your kitchen or backyard. They are designed for students
in kindergarten through second or third grade. In either case, the object
is to make science fun, practical, and realistic.
