PACKARD MIDDLE SCHOOL TESTIMONIAL
At Packard Middle School, we started the project as soon as we were given
the protocol. We completed the project with 240 8th grade
students in eight different classes.
Students were excited about working with different types of technology
and they were able to see the connection between math and science.
Approximately, eighty percent of the students were actively involved in
the experiment; they followed all procedures, and understood the goal
of the experiment. The other students were either not challenged
enough with the project because of the lengthy process of the data collection,
or they were not interested in any aspect of the project. There
were not enough testing materials (boxes) for all the students to be involved
at all times.
We have several recommendations to enhance the project for eighth grade
students. When we were approached to conduct the project, all the procedures
were not yet in place and the criteria was still being developed; therefore
we as eighth grade teachers needed to modify the tentative protocol.
One of the recommendations would be to have a sufficient amount of testing
materials, so all students will be involved at all times. As math teachers
we needed to have the expertise of a science teacher to help us with the
science aspects of the project. The benefits of completing the project
were not as great for eighth graders as compared to high school students.
Overall, the students had a great experience and we had a great report
from the parents and great feed back from other teachers and administrators.
