United Nations Opening of the Season of Non-Violence
January 30, 2003

On Thursday, January 30th, 2003, members of the EEV were invited to share in a special ceremony at the United Nations for the opening of the Gandhi-King Season for Non-Violence. The international movement for the Season for Non-Violence was inspired by the 50th and 30th memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1998. This grassroots campaign, dedicated to demostrating that nonviolence is a powerful way to heal, transform and empower our lives and communities, begins every January 30th and extends through April 4th. At this year’s event, over 800 participants listened to a presentation made by the World Health Organization (WHO) on the effects of violence on world health. After a panel of five members made up of different organizations promoting peace and goodwill, spoke about ways to combat violence in our own communities and visions of the future, they invited audience members to participate in a question and answer session. The closing ceremonies were led by the organization Pathways for Peace, and culminated in a World Flag ceremony, which included inspirational words by Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., read by our very own EEV Westbury High School students. It was certainly a day to remember. Please follow our links to pictures of the event taken by our Westbury and Bridgehampton attendees.
