Objectives: Students will be able to demonstrate skills in Elementary Math such as classifying, counting, and graphing while participating in a hands-on activity. The students will count the M&M’s by color and sort them, record the data, and make a graph of the data found. This will enhance such skills as interpreting data, collecting, and analyzing.

Grade Level: 1-2

Subject: Elementary Math

Background: The students will need to know the basic concepts in Math such as counting, and graphing.

Materials: Small bags of M&M’s for each student, pencils, paper, rulers, and crayons.

Procedure: 1. Each student will receive one bag of M&M’s.

2. The students will then open the bag and sort and classify the M&M’s according to color.

3. The students will record the information they find on a chart such as how many of each

color is in their bag.

4. The students will then create their own pictograph.

5. The students will then answer some questions about their bag of M&M’s:

Were there more green or yellow M&M’s in your bag?

Were there more red or blue M&M’s in your bag?

Which color M&M is your favorite?

Which color M&M is your least favorite?

6. The students can then compare their graphs with the other students.
