OBJECTIVES:

1.To make fossils.

2.To learn about fossils and how they came about.

GRADE LEVEL/ SUBJECT: 1st grade to 3rd grade science

MATERIALS:

Student Materials: leaves, pens, and molds

Teacher’s Materials: plaster

TIME REQUIERED: two class periods

ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:

Have a class discussion on fossils.

Have the students; maybe during recess or after school look for a leaf.

Have the students bring their leaves.

The teacher should pour some plaster into each student’s mold.

Allow a few minutes for it to dry slightly.

Have the students press the leaf onto the mold (on the veiny side).

Have the students write their name on the mold.

Allow a few hours for it to dry and then have the students remove the leaf.

Then let it dry for 24 hours.

Fossils are made.

FOLLOW UP/ EXTENSION:

Lead a class discussion on fossils.

Assign each student a one-page report on fossils.
