Geography

The country I have researched is Syria. The country's  official name is the Syrian Arab Republic. Syria is located in the North Western Hemisphere.  The capital city of Syria is Damascus. It is on the continent of Asia. Some neighboring countries are; Iraq, Israel, Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon.      

Population

The population of Syria is about 17,400,000 people in total. The total life expectancy of Syria is about 68.77 years old. For a male, it is about 67.63 years, and for a female, it is about 69.98 years. The literacy rate is; 70.8% male, 85.7% female and 55.8% children. 

Climate

In Syria, it is mostly desert. In the summer (June to August), it is hot, dry and sunny. In the winter (December to February), it is mild and rainy. Along the coast, cold weather brings snow or sleet, periodically hitting Damascus.

Government

Laws in Syria are generally based on Islamic laws.

Economy

In Syria, crops that are grown are of the following: Wheat, Barley, Cotton, Lentils, Chickpeas, Olives, Sugar Beets; beef, mutton, eggs, poultry, and milk. The currency in Syria is the Syrian pound (£s).

Religion

Islamic religion is the main religion of Syria. About 74% of the population is Sunni Muslims. 16% of the population is other Islamic groups such as Alawites, Druze, and Shi'ites. Friday is the day when Muslims do their worshipping. Another 10% of the population are Christians. There are Christian groups such as Greek Orthodox, Armenian Orthodox, Syrian Orthodox, Syrian Catholics, Maronites, and other small Christian groups.    

Holidays

Some Holidays celebrated in Syria are Libyan Revolution Day (September 1), Egyptian Revolution Day (July 23), Martyr's Day (May 6), Labor Day ( May 1), Revolution Day (March 8) and New Years Day. 

Sports and Recreation

The most popular sport in Syria is soccer. Next comes basketball, this is most common among male students. Many people who live along the coasts play water sports.  Women in Syria are not very competitive, but still play sports like volleyball and basketball. Younger women dance while older women talk about and give each other recipes and do different crafts in groups. Many friends like to get together at places like coffee shops. Younger people like to go to movies while the old people like to stay home and watch TV. or rent or watch videos. Families love to go outside.

Food

 Some goods produced in Syria are petroleum, textiles, cotton, fruits, vegetables, wheat, chickens, and some oils. People in Syria typically provide for themselves and their families with food and other necessary things by farming. The people in Syria grow their food themselves. It is shipped to a market and bought there. Some of the food above is their some of there "staple food". A "staple food" is a food that is eaten daily.

Language

The languages spoken in Syria are; Arabic, Kurdish, Armenian, Aramaic, Circassian, and French. 

English is not the official language of Syria.
