Geography

Michigan has upper and lower peninsulas. The upper peninsula is about one-fourth the size of the lower peninsula. Michigan is 58,527 in square miles.

The state population of Michigan is 9,295,297

 

 

 

Michigan is surrounded by 4 out of the 5 great lakes, they are Lake Superior, lake Michigan, Lake Erie, and Lake Huron. Lake Ontario does not touch Michigan.

Settlers came to Michigan to trade fur. They got there from riding the Erie Canal. They also came to go mining for ore and copper.

Climate

The typical weather pattern is in the upper peninsula in the winter is 10ºf-25ºf and In the summer it's 60ºf-72ºf. In the lower peninsula in the winter it is 19-32ºf and in the summer it is 73ºf .The natural hazards are forest fires and snowstorms.

History

Many people migrated from Europe, Poland, Italy, and Mexico.  The early settlers traded fur. In 1825 they traveled the Erie Canal. Farming became popular. Mining was for ore and copper. People also came for logging. In the early 1900's car factories boomed , later people cane to work for Kellogg and Post cereal factories.

On January,26,1837 Michigan became the 26th state of the union.

Economy

Massachusetts was an important center of commerce, fishing, and shipbuilding in colonial times. In the early 19th century its economy became increasingly dominated by manufacturing, especially the production of textiles and footwear. These industries declined in the 20th century, but manufacturing remained a leading economic activity. The Boston area became known as a center for advanced research and for the production of high-technology electronic items. The state also has a big summer tourist industry. Boston is a major financial and insurance center.

The tourist industry is extremely important; about 33 million tourists visit the state each year, contributing more than $11.7 billion to the state economy. Attractions include the summer vacation areas of Cape Cod and nearby Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket islands and the historical sites and cultural institutions of the Boston area. Many travelers also visit the upland areas of the Berkshire Hills in the W; especially popular here is the summer Berkshire Music Festival at the Tangle wood estate in Lenox. Massachusetts maintains 192 state parks, recreation areas, and historic sites.

Language

The major language in Michigan is English. There are local areas that still speak the language of the various people that settled there. These languages would include Polish, Italian and Spanish. 

Food

 Michigan's three traditional dishes are Michigan's cherry pie, Apple strudel, and Pasty (Meat Potato-Filled Pastry Turnover).

Cultural Arts

The Arts League of Michigan (ALM) was formed in 1991 by a group of dedicated artists and arts enthusiasts with a passion for artistic disciplines and cultural expressions.  For several years, The Arts League managed a performing and visual arts touring program showcasing Michigan minority artists in communities throughout the State  is known for.  Share an example of this art form and explain how it serves as an expression of culture.

Some museums found in Michigan are the Detroit Instate of Arts, and Henry ford museum, and many much more. 

Important buildings in Michigan are Kellogg's and Post cereal companies' buildings.

Just about every religion in the world is represented in the United States.

They go Skiing, Ice skating, Fishing, play Lacrosse, and have Bike Races that's what they do for fun. 

Family Values

Children from ages 6-16 must attend school. They have public and parochial elementary and high schools.13 public universities and 29 community colleges, and many art schools.
