Geography

My country is the Republic of Hungary, which is also known as Hungary. Budapest is the capital. Hungary is located in the eastern hemisphere in central Europe. It borders Romania, Austria, Croatia, Yugoslavia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ukraine. 

Hungary is mostly made up of flat land, rolling plains, hills and low mountains. The lowest point is the Tisza River and the highest is Kekes. 

Hungary's natural resources are bauxite, coal, natural gas, fertile soils, and arable land. Hungary is made up of 2,171 kilometers of land. It's land is landlocked and it is slightly smaller than Indiana. 

Population

Hungary is a multi-ethnic country.  90% of the population is made up of Magyars (Hungarians) , 4% Romany (Gypsies), 2.6% Germans, 2% Serbs, 0.8% Slovaks, and 0.7 Romanians. The largest city in Hungary is Budapest which has about 1.8 million people.

Climate

The climate in Hungary is pretty much the same as the rest of Europe. It has cold winters and warm summers. The average temperature in the winter is 32°F and the average in the summer is 70°F to 75°F.  

Food

Since 55% of the land is suitable for growing food so Hungary grows almost all its food.  Their staple food is paprika, which a spice. It is a common in many Hungarian dishes such as goulash, and stuffed paprika.

 Government

Hungary is made up of 19 counties. The president is chief of state and the prime minister is head of government. The parliament is made up of the National Assembly. The voting age is 18. 

Holidays and Festivals

Some of the holidays celebrated are New Year's Day, War of Freedom Day, Easter, Labor Day, Pentecost, St. Stephen's Day,  Christmas, and the National Holiday. At Easter, it is a custom in some places that the boys sprinkle girls with water or cologne as a sign that the girl is a flower that should not wilt. St. Stephen's Day celebrates the harvest and honors the first king of Hungary. 

Fun and Recreation

Hungarians love to play sports and the most popular recreation is soccer. Other important sports are swimming, tennis, fencing, and sailing. Hunting and fishing are also popular activities. Many Hungarians enjoy horseback riding too. 

Useful Expressions:

The official language of Hungary is Magyar (Hungarian)- 98% of the population of the population speaks it. Magyar is part of the Finno-Ugrian group of the Uralic language family and Estonian and Finnish is too.
