Government
A draft law takes the
form of a parliamentary bill. It must go through necessary stages in both
houses of Parliament. The Queen must signify her approval, which is
a formality, the bill then becomes an act.
Religion
The
major religions in my country are Church of England, Baptist,
Catholic, Muslim, Hindu and Sikh.
Language:
There are a lot of
languages spoken in England but the main language is English. The
most important expressions to know when you go to England are
"sir" or "ma'am".
Cultural Arts
The most
famous and well known author is William Shakespeare.
Family Values
Children go to school starting at the age of 6, children do
attend collage. Both
children receive the same amount of education.
Grandparents
live with the family. Youngsters through the ages of 13 and on are
depended on to take care of the elders if something happens to
them.
A Note From England:
"I am an English woman living close to London,
and I have just read your website. The only women wearing "plain skirts and
simple accessories" are very rare, possibly over 50, (or the Queen) - the
rest of us dress in a very fashionable European style akin to Paris. Our
food is also very cosmopolitan, bacon is still enjoyed occasionally as a
breakfast dish, and Yorkshire pudding is only served traditionally with
beef, usually on a Sunday. Most diets these days are sushi for lunch, and
salads, with Italian, French and modern sophisticated food for dinner.
With regard to "Sir" or "Ma'am" the only people referred to in this fashion
are members of the Royal family, or peerage (Dukes, Lords etc.) The chances
of having to use this form of address is very unlikely indeed, although
polite efficient hotel and waiting staff may refer to individuals as Sir or
Madam, just as in America." |
Food
The crops that are
grown in England are cereals, oilseed, potatoes, and
vegetables. Most people in England get their food by buying it
in a market. Very few people in England grow it themselves.
Please see the "Note from England" below for more information
about diet.
Yorkshire Pudding
http://www.cyber-kitchen.com/ubbs/archive/countryrecipes.html
2 eggs
1 cup milk
1 cup sifted flour (measure after sifting)
1/2 tsp salt
Beef drippings
Preheat oven to 450°F. Beat the eggs with the milk. Sift
together the flour
and salt, and stir this into the egg mixture. Beat the batter
until well
blended.
Discard most of the fat from the pan in which the beef was
roasted. Heat an
11"x7" baking pan or ring mold, and pour into it 1/4 cup of
the beef
drippings. Pour in the pudding mixture and bake 10 minutes.
Reduce the oven
temperature to 350° and bake 15-20 minutes longer or until
puffy and a
delicate brown. Cut into squares and serve immediately with
roast beef.
Serves 4.
