Geography

Denmark's capital is Copenhagen which is located in the northeast area of Denmark. Denmark is in Europe which is in the northern and eastern hemispheres and western hemisphere. This is because it includes Greenland and the Faeroe Islands. Denmark only has one  bordering country that is attached  - that one country is Germany. 

Climate

The climate is usually humid, there are mild, windy winters and cool summers. 

 

 

Economy

In Denmark, the currency/money is called a Danish Krone. It is also written DKr. One dollar in Danish Krone is 0.157662 dollar. Most employed Danes work an average of thirty-seven hours a week in a wide range of jobs.  Some of the goods that they produce are clothing and electronic equipment.  Approximately 50% of revenue generated by taxes is spent on welfare, healthcare, and public services.

Government

Elected officials are chosen by popular vote on the basis of proportional representation.  They serve a four year term.

 

Religion

Some of the major religions that are practiced in Denmark are Evangelical Lutheran, Muslim, and Roman Catholic. One kind of religious ritual that Roman Catholic people have is baptism. 

Fun and Recreation

Popular sports in Denmark include soccer and ice skating.  Since the climate in Denmark is very cold at times, winter sports are always popular in this country.

 

Language

In Denmark the main language spoken is Danish.  People also speak German and English there.  To say hello to someone in Denmark you should say "go da", which means hello.  Other useful expressions to know if you plan to visit Denmark are "faar vael" (good bye), "vearsco" (please), and "taak" (thank you).

Food

The crops grown in Denmark are grains, potatoes, rape, sugar beets; beef, dairy products; fish. 

The people of Denmark both grow and  buy their food. Three staple foods of Denmark are potatoes, fish and meat.

One unique dish is roast duckling stuffed with apples and prunes; served with red cabbage and broiled potatoes. 

Usually for breakfast, people would have cereal, cheese or eggs. Lunch would be fish, meat, or an open-faced sandwich or also it can be called smorebrod. For dinner, you might have fish or meat with other small side dishes in Denmark.  

Cultural Arts

Frederiksberg Castle

  • A well known film director in Denmark is Carl Dreyer.  Carl Nielsen, Denmark's greatest composer, created over 100 works. 

  • The Danish Ballet is a world renown dance company.

  • Han Christian Anderson, a Danish writer, wrote many popular children's stories such as The Ugly Duckling.

  • The Aalborg Museum of History, the Art Museum of Modern Art, and the Auto Mobil Museum are popular sites to visit.

Holidays and Festivals

Christmas in Denmark is similar to Christmas in the United States.  They observe many of the same customs and tradition associated with the holiday.  Other holidays celebrated in Denmark include New Year's Day, Easter, Common Prayer Day, Constitution Day, and Boxing Day.
