Geography

Cuba is in central  America. There are 3 bodies of water that surround it, their names are Gulf of Mexico which is in the North, East Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Most of their territory is mountain ranges, the 3 main ranges are La Sierra de Los, La Sierra del Escambray and La Sierra Maestra.

Cuba has a lot of natural resources. Here is a list of most of them: cobalt, nickel, iron, ore ,copper, manganese, salt, timber, silica, petroleum  and  arable land.

Population

Cuba has a large population for its very little land . In fact there are 11,224,321 people that live there!   

Climate

The weather in Cuba is very tropical and dry.  In Cuba there they have 2 rainy seasons that are around May and October. The hottest months are July and August. Natural disasters that happen are hurricanes that happen in Autumn. The hurricanes flood cities and towns. 

Economy

Cuba supplies food such as sugar, rice, beans and cooking oil.

Government

The capital of Cuba is Havana.

Cuba got their independence on December 10, 1898. The constitution was done on February 24, 1978. It was amended on July 1992. 

Education

In Cuba education is free for everyone. They spend one year in pre school, six years in primary and six in secondary. Male and female get the same amount of education.

 

Cultural Arts:

The first poet to voice a Cuban longing for freedom was José María Heredia.

Ballet is very popular in Cuba. Prima ballerina Alicia Alonso founded the Ballet Nacional de Cuba in 1948

 

Non-Verbal Communication

In Cuba people write in Spanish. There lettering is the same way we do but they spell things in different ways. Cubans write the same way left to right.

 

Useful Expressions:

In Cuba the language they speak is Spanish.

Food

Cuba's has a regular supply of food, such as sugar, rice, beans and cooking oil. The staple food in Cuba is vegetables and meat. Foods that Cubans eat are: beef, chicken, eggs and milk. 

Since meat and vegetables are Cuba's staple foods, they eat a stew called Ajiaco. A menu that Cubans would most likely eat everyday would probably be something with beef, chicken, beans and rice.   

Social Etiquette

People in Cuba eat the way we do. They use forks and spoons, but there are many different foods that they eat.

 

Religion

The Religions that they practice are Jewish , Roman, Christen and Santeria. 

Holidays and Festivals

Christmas Eve is a very important Christian holiday for Cubans. On this holiday people dance, drink and enjoy themselves during the holiday. 

Holy Week is a celebration of 3 wise men to Jesus. A lot of black Cubans celebrate this holiday because  one of the wise men was an African American.

Carnival is held in early spring before the beginning of lent. This holiday was a time to enjoy life release energy. Groups of dancers and musicians  party in the streets and have parades and floats come by. 

 

Fun and Recreation

Baseball (pelota) is Cuba's favorite sport. Baseball was brought to Cuba in the 19th century by North Americans. The first games were played by Cuban dock workers and American sailors. The Spanish banned the game in 1895, since the revenues from baseball games were used to support José Martin's independence movement. The ban was lifted after independence.
