Geography

The capital of Colombia is Sante Fe de Bogotá. It is in the Northern, and Western hemispheres. The continent it is located on is South America, and its  neighboring countries are Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador,and  Panama.

It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The Amazon, Atrato, Magdalena, Orinoco and the Sinú are important rivers.

The Andes Mountains can be found in Colombia.

Population

The population is 41,008,227. The males usually live around 66.43 years. Women live around 74.27 years.   

 

Climate

Coastlands-tropical, eastern plains-cooler in high land, river valleys-hot and wet sometimes rainy. January/54.9oF, July/55.2oF. Rainfall averages about 37.2 inches per year.

Government

Laws are made in Colombia by the legislative branch.   People vote for their Presidents.   

Food

Some crops are coffee, bananas, corn, sugarcane, yucca, potatoes and rice. Most people got their food by either growing it, or buying it at a store.  The staple food is grilled beef, stewed beef with  sauce, chicken with rice and grilled fish.

Some unique dishes are empandas, which are pastries stuffed with meat and vegetables. Another dish is bunelos which are deep-fried balls of dough, cheeses and yucca bread. 

A typical day's menu is: Breakfast-juice, fruit, jam and coffee. Lunch-Soup, rice, meat with vegetables and desserts.  Dinner- Rice, meat with vegetables, desserts. 

Economy

The currency used is the peso. One U.S. dollar is worth 455 pesos in Colombia.

Some products Colombia produces are  flowers, oil, coffee, bananas, sugarcane, and cattle. The people make a living for themselves and their families by working as farmers, cattle breeders, miners, and factory workers.
