What are some unique dishes and recipes from the area? Go to the Food Museum and find out if any particular food originated in your area.

Family Values

Explain the different roles of different members of the family in this space. Consider the following: 

Do grandparents live with the family? When older members of a family become ill and need care during the day is it the custom in your country for younger family members to care for the elderly or are they generally placed in homes for the aged?

What are the responsibilities of the mother and the father?  Do both parents usually work?  Do they usually work inside the home or outside the home? Are there special days set aside for honoring the family in your country such as Mother's Day or Father's Day? Is there a Grandparent's day?   3-6 SENTENCES

Child-Raising Beliefs

What responsibilities do the children have? Do they have chores to do at home?  Do they work at jobs outside the home? Are sons and daughters treated equally? Does it matter if a child is the youngest, the middle, or the oldest?   2-4 SENTENCES

Children's Rights

Go to UNICEF's Voices of Youth site.  Review The Convention on the Rights of the Child.  It sets out the rights of every child in the world.  In particular, look at "The Right to Protection from Harmful Work," "The Right to an Education," and "The Right to a Safe and Healthy Life." Think about the rights of children in your country. Do their rights match those from the Convention?  Are they missing any rights?  3-4 SENTENCES

Social Etiquette

Reflection

Share what you have learned by comparing the life of a typical American 5th grader  with the  life of a child from the country you have researched. Print out the Venn Diagram and use it to brainstorm how features of culture are similar or different.  Choose at least four features of culture to compare and contrast. Then use this space to write a 1-2 paragraph reflection based on your Venn Diagram and your responses to the brainstorm questions on your Inspiration Concept Map.
