Tell Me a Story About YOU
You will create digital self-portraits. In these portraits, you
will explore who you are in relation to your heritage and your hopes
and dreams for the future.
PART I: POETRY WRITING
You should begin this activity by doing a "Quick Think"
exercise. Click
here to print out the worksheet you will need. You will write
two poems:
1. Go to the ETTC
Interactive Poetry Page.
- On the left side of the page, browse through the different
interactive poetry templates. Choose one to tell the story of
you.
- Write your poem by filling in the blanks
Copy and paste your poem into Word.
and then
2. Write a poem about you using color as your theme. Colors make
good topics for poems because they are rich with symbolism. We
think of some colors as representative of happiness, others symbolizing
sadness. QUICK THINK: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOR AND WHY???
Children of different cultures might not choose some of the same
colors that you would to describe happiness and other emotions.
That's because some colors have different meanings in other cultures.
For example, yellow is considered a happy or lucky color in India;
but for Bulgarians, yellow symbolizes hatred! Use the COLOR SYMBOLISM
LINKS to explore color meanings, which will help you understand
cultural color meaning, language, and which colors work well together.
THEN write "The Colors
of Me" poem. (You may use this format or just write your
own poem.
PART II: DIGITAL SELF-PORTRAIT
to see some options for creating your digital self portrait.
Now you will create the digital art to go with your poem. There
are two options for doing this. Option 1 will require using Adobe
Photoshop Elements. Using Photoshop, you may either create
Warhol inspired self-portrait (this will work a color poem)
Collage (this will require you to use photos of objects that represent
who you are)
The second option for your digital art is to use the Flickr website.
This is a much easier process than using Photoshop. You may choose
from:
The "Hockneyizer"
The "Motivator"
The "Magazine Cover"
The "Trading Card Maker"
