Introduction
Welcome to On the Trail of the First People, an
online project for 4th and 5th grade students researching Native Americans.
In this project, we are hoping that schools located in the Northeast, Southeast,
Plains, Southwest, California, Far Pacific Northwest, and the Far North
will research tribes indigenous to their area and then share their knowledge
with all through the use of Web 2.0 tools.
Project will begin October, 2007 and will run through January 2008.
You are invited to participate in
this project by following the guidelines below:
FIRST: Register your class to participate in this project
by contacting the project coordinator, Karen
Kliegman.
Be sure to include the following information:
- Teacher's Name
- Teacher's email
- School location
- Grade level that you teach
NEXT:
- You will receive permission to access our digital mapping
tool and add your school to the map.
- You will also receive an invitation to view our class wiki, where students
will publish their research.
- You will be expected to set up your own class blog or wiki for your students
(you may use Classroom Blogmeister or
any free blog generator that you wish or, if you choose to do a wiki, you
may use Wikispaces or PB
Wiki)
. Although you may use any social networking tool you wish to, it is highly
suggested that you use a class wiki for publishing student researching
since it lends itself quite well to groupwork.
- All class blogs or wikis will be linked to our digital map along with
your school's marker.
- Native American
tribes should be geographically marked by students on the map.
- Finally, there will be a teacher wiki for all participating teachers
with additional resources, suggestions, helpful hints and a discussion
area.
