Dear Citizen,

     Your country desperately needs your help in creating a new federal holiday that best represents the spirit of America. Your task will not be an easy one, because you must imagine a holiday that represents your idea of America. You will need to determine what the United States means to you, and to your fellow countrymen.  We need the students of America to remind us what the United States really means.

Alexis de Tocqueville, an early visitor to the United States, described America as:

". . . a society which comprises all the nations of the world . . . people differing from one another in language, in beliefs, in opinions. . ."
