INTRODUCTION

You have been selected to make our community aware that our beaches and marine animals are in trouble!

Your job is to let the public know what they can do to help!

"A picture is worth a thousand words."

TASK

TASK #1: Look at the photographs above.  Brainstorm what you think these pictures are saying. What are the photographers trying to show you? What is the message in these pictures?  Create a list in your Art Journal of the things you notice in the photographs and reasons how those items might have gotten there.
TASK #2: Using INSPIRATION, create a CONCEPT MAP that shows 5 relationships between humans, nature, and marine life that the public should be aware of.  On your map also include 10 helpful facts or tips that the public should do to help the situation.
TASK #3: Choose a fact or idea that you learned. Create a poster with your partner that will inform the Searingtown  community about the issue.

PROCESS
Below you will find the steps that you should follow. Before you begin your WebQuest, read through each step carefully.

1. Choose a Partner

Find someone with whom you work well. You will share a pair of computers throughout the project. You will be responsible for helping each other.

Your class will be divided into 2 sections. One section will research ocean and beach pollution. The other section will research the threats to marine animals.

Go to Evaluation. Look at "Participation" to see how you  will be evaluated.

Keep your notes in your Art Journal.

2. Brainstorm

bulletBrainstorm ideas about the photographs above. What kind of things could cause the beach to look like that? Why is that seal "in trouble"? Make a list of your observations and ideas in your Art Journal.
bulletMeet with another group and discuss your different ideas.
bulletParticipate in class discussion.

3. WebQuest

bulletYou and your partner will use books and Internet resources to research why our beaches and marine animals are in trouble and what we can do about it.
bulletVisit all the Internet sites provided. The Internet resources you need can be found by clicking on the name of your team at the top of this page. Click on "Ocean/Beach Pollution" if you are on that team.   Click on "Marine Animal Threats" if you are on that team.
bulletUse your ART JOURNAL to write down information that will help explain why our beaches and marine animals are in trouble and what we can do about it.
bulletRecord at least 2 facts from each site you visit.
bulletBoth you and your partner are Researchers and Recorders. Take notes in your own journal.

4. Create a Concept Map

Use Inspiration to create a concept map.

On  your map, show at least 5 relationships between humans, animals, and the ocean. Use facts you learned in your research.

Also include at least 10 helpful tips that you would like to make the public aware of so that they can help the situation.

Go to "Evaulation" and make sure you follow all directions for "Concept Map."

5. Make a Poster

bulletChoose one important idea from either of your concept maps. For example: "Clip your plastic soda 6-pack rings so animals don't get caught in them."
bulletGo to Evaluation before you begin and look at "Final Product" to make sure you follow all the directions.
bulletMake a poster that illustrates the idea you have chosen. It MUST HAVE an important message or helpful tip. You may use paper, markers, crayons or you may create a BLACK AND WHITE picture using software in the computer lab and color it after it has been printed. You may wish to discuss your poster ideas with Mrs. Willliams.
bulletYour poster must:
bullet (1) have an important tip or message
bullet(2) be neat
bullet(3) have no spelling errors.

6. Evaluation

Go to the top of the page and click on the "Evaluation" button. Print out an evaluation form for your team. Use the rubrics to evaluate each part of your project. After you have evaluated your project, put the rubrics in your folder.

7. Student Showcase

Once every team in your class has finished steps 1-5, you will share your work. You will present your poster to the class. Remember to be a good listener while others are presenting.

Everyone's posters will be displayed at our School Showcase!!

As a class, choose three posters which demonstrate the most outstanding work in the class. These three posters will be posted on the Circle of Life Website.
