INTRODUCTION

You are part of a newly hired marine biologist team for the Riverhead Foundation.  When people come to visit the Aquarium, they have a lot of questions about seals and sea turtles.  Your job is to provide them with the answers they seek.

"A picture is worth a thousand words."

TASK

TASK #1: Using INSPIRATION, create a concept map which describes why people should care about sea turtles and seals.
TASK #2: Using POWERPOINT, create a slide describing your assigned marine animal.
Students will be able to use your work to learn about the different types of seals and sea turtles that they may encounter when they visit the Riverhead Foundation.

TASK #3: Based on what you learn about seals and sea turtles, you will create an ART MURAL under the guidance of Mrs. Williams

PROCESS
Below you will find the steps that you should follow. Before you begin your Web Quest, read through each step carefully.

1. Choose a Partner

Find someone with whom you work well. You will share a pair of computers throughout the project. You will be responsible for helping each other. Your class will be divided into 2 sections. One section will research different species of sea turtles and the other will research different species of seals. Go to Evaluation. Look at "Participation" to see how you will be evaluated. Keep your notes in your Art Journal.

2. Brainstorm

First, get a little background about sea turtles or about seals (pinnipeds). Go to the appropriate site below and read the information with your partner carefully. Make a list of at least 10 facts about sea turtles or seals in your Art Journal with your partner. Keep your notes brief.

About sea turtles

What are pinnipeds?

Next, go to the vocabulary sites below and print out the vocabulary sheets (1 per person). Tape the sheets into your Art Journal.

Go to Evaluation. Look at "Brainstorm and Notes" to make sure you do everything you need to do.

3. Create a Concept Map.

Read about why we should care about sea turtles or seals using the links below. You and your partner may take notes in your Art Journal.

Why should we care about sea turtles?
Why should we care about seals?

Find another team from your section who is ready to share their notes and ideas. Talk about what you learned. You can add any ideas that you like to your notes.

Use Inspiration to create a concept map. On your map, give at least 5 reasons why humans should care about marine animals. Use facts you learned in your research. Make sure your map fits on to one page. It should look good and be easy to understand.

Go to Evaluation. Look at "Concept Map."  Make sure you followed all of the directions. Print out your maps (1 per person).

4. Web Quest

Click on the Seal Researcher Button at the top of the page if you are researching SEALS.  Click on the Sea Turtle Button at the top of the page if you are researching TURTLES.

5. Make 2 PowerPoint Slides

Each partner should make 2 PowerPoint slides that will show what they have learned in their research. Make sure you go to Evaluation below to find out how your slides will be judged!

6. Evaluation

Go to the top of the page and click on the "Evaluation" button. Print out an evaluation form for your team. Use the rubrics to evaluate each part of your project. After you have evaluated your project, put the rubrics in your folder.

7. Student Showcase

Once every team in your class has finished steps 1-6, the "Tech Team" will put everyone's slides together into one PowerPoint
Show, where we can share everyone's work. The PowerPoint Show will be posted on the "Circle of Life" Website. Printouts of your slides will be displayed at our School Showcase!

Conclusion:

Congratulations!  You and your classmates have become experts on seals and sea turtles.  You have mastered some very important technology tools as well.  Our school community is looking forward to seeing the artwork you create with Mrs. Williams!!!
