INTRODUCTION

You have been selected to be on the Artist-Naturalist Team. You might be wondering what exactly an Artist-Naturalist is. You could say that an Artist-Naturalist is a person who uses art-making as a way to celebrate nature.

Your job is to help the rest of Searingtown School understand why it is so important to take time to appreciate nature! When you complete this web quest you will be able to answer the following question:  How are art-making and scientific discovery related?

TASK

TASK #1: You will create a map using Inspiration, showing the relationship between an artist, nature, and science. Remember, art can be visual (such as a painting) or written (such as a poem).
TASK #2: Choose a fact or idea that you learned about the artist-naturalist you researched. Create a poster that will help our school become aware of what you have learned.

PROCESS

Below you will find the steps that you should follow. Before you begin your Web Quest, read through each step carefully.

1. Choose a Partner

Find someone with whom you work well. You will share a pair of computers throughout the project. You will be responsible for helping each other.  Go to Evaluation. Look at "Participation" to see how you will be evaluated. Keep your notes in your Art Journal.

2. Brainstorm

After reading the information found through the "Task 1" link provided in resources, you and your partner will BRAINSTORM ideas about artist-naturalists and how they are connected to nature and science. Take notes in your Art Journal.

Find another team from the other section who is ready to share their notes and ideas. Talk about what you learned. You can add any ideas that you like to your notes.

3. Create a Concept Map.

bulletUsing INSPIRATION, create a concept map that explores the connections between art, nature, and science.
bulletGo to Evaluation. Look at "Concept Map."  Make sure you follow all of the directions.
bulletMake sure your map fits on to one page. It should look good and be easy to understand.
bulletPrint out your concept map (1 map per person).

4. Web Quest

bulletNext research an artist-naturalist. Use the "Task 2" link provided
in "Resources" and read about the life of your assigned artist-naturalist. You may also looks for books about your artist-naturalist in our library to find more information.
bulletAfter you have finished your reading, you and your partner should decide what was important and interesting about that person.  Use your Art Journal to write down important and interesting information about the person you are studying. Both you and your partner are Researchers and Recorders. Take notes in your own Art Journal.
bulletWhile you are on the Internet, look for a photo of your artist-naturalist, a sample of their work, and a quotation from him/her (if possible).  When you come across these items, SAVE the images and quotation in your teacher's folder, located on the computer network.  IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO THIS, ASK FOR HELP from any of the teachers in the room.

5. Make a Poster

bulletChoose one idea or concept that you learned about your person. You and your partner will create a poster that expresses that idea. Your poster should have an important message that you think is worthy of sharing with our school community.
bulletYou may use any art medium or art style to create your poster. You may make a collage; use paper, markers, crayons; or you may create a BLACK AND WHITE picture using software in the computer lab and color it after it has been printed. You may wish to meet with Mrs. Williams to discuss ideas for your poster.
bulletGo to Evaluation before you begin and look at "Final Product" to make sure you follow all directions.

6. Evaluation

Go to the top of the page and click on the "Evaluation" button. Print out an evaluation form for your team. Use the rubrics to evaluate each part of your project. After you have evaluated your project, put the rubrics in your Art Journal.

7. Student Showcase

Once every team in your class has finished steps 1-5, you will share your work. You will present your poster to the class. Remember to be a good listener while others are presenting.

Everyone's posters will be displayed at our School Showcase!!

As a class, choose three posters which demonstrate the most outstanding work in the class. These three posters will be posted on the Circle of Life Website.
