The Legacy of Janusz Korzcak

Westring

Artist: Mary Westring

Hands, like eyes, are able to express our most basic human qualities. They can be clenched in anger, raised in defiance or threat. Hands are offered in friendship, relay a greeting, ward off danger. They indicate confusion, surprise, joy, amazement. Hands caress, shield, give comfort, embrace and teach.

I have chosen to express my impression of the life of Janusz Korczak with the symbolic depiction of hands expressing his care of and concern for the children whom he tried, ultimately in vain, to nurture and protect.
