Chivy Sok Visit |
November 2005 |
Chivy Sok, Children's Rights Activist, visited Searingtown School. Chivy shared the story of her childhood. Chivy was born in Cambodia, during the time of the Khmer Rouge. As an eight year-old, Chivy was taken from her family and forced to work in the Killing Fields from sun-up to sun-down. In these photos, Chivy shows children the back breaking work she had to do. One day, while shoveling in the fields, she sliced her foot open with the shovel. In the photo above, Chivy shows students the scar on her foot. Chivy wears the scarf around her head to demonstrate to children how, as a child, she protected herself from the burning hot sun.
