Photo Analysis Sheet

Group Roles

For this task, we will examine the work of two photographers who have documented instances of child labor. Lewis Hine's work focuses on child labor in the United States in the early 1900's. David Parker, MD, in his Stolen Dreams Gallery examines child labor in other parts of the world today. They are both WITNESSES TO HISTORY. We want to study them because the goal of our project is to video document child labor so that we too will be witnesses to history.

We will learn about these two important people, analyze some of their photos, and then reconvene to discuss the following questions:

What do the photographs tell you about child labor in US history?

What do the photographs tell you about child labor in the world today?

What is the nature of work conducted by children in different parts of the world?

How can we, as a class, document child labor around the world?

"There is work that profits children, and there is work that brings profit only to employers. The object of employing children is not to train them, but to get high profits from their work." -- Lewis Hine, 1908
